Education
Anna Mae Yu Lamentillo stands as a dedicated advocate for education in the Philippines. With a steadfast commitment to accessible education for all, Anna Mae has focused on breaking down barriers and creating opportunities for marginalized communities, particularly women, children, persons with disabilities, and indigenous people.
The education gap in the Philippines remains significant. According to the Department of Education, around 2.3 million children were out of school in 2019, with the number increasing during the COVID-19 pandemic. Rural areas and marginalized communities are the hardest hit, with limited access to quality education and resources.
During her tenure at the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Anna Mae played a pivotal role in the construction of 150,149 classrooms across the country. Recognizing the unique needs of all students, these classrooms were designed with modifications to ensure accessibility for persons with disabilities (PWDs), providing essential learning spaces that cater to everyone. Anna Mae's efforts have not only expanded educational infrastructure but also laid the foundation for a more inclusive and empowered society.
Furthermore, Anna Mae spearheaded initiatives to ensure that Wi-Fi connectivity reaches even the most remote areas of the Philippines. Currently, only about 30% of public schools have access to the internet, highlighting the urgent need for digital inclusion. By bridging the digital divide, she has facilitated access to educational resources, empowering learners with the tools they need to succeed in the digital age.
Anna Mae's unwavering commitment to inclusive education is not merely about building structures; it's about building a brighter future for generations to come. Her tireless advocacy has significantly contributed to breaking down barriers and creating opportunities for marginalized communities, ultimately paving the way for a more equitable and prosperous nation.
In Anna Mae, Filipinos find a champion for their right to quality education. Her dedication serves as a testament to her vision of a more inclusive and empowered society, where every individual has the opportunity to thrive and succeed.
